MLK Day 'The Dream'

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. day. A day to remember a great man that stood for peace and unity. I like what the man had to say. I believe in his message.

A problem I'm having with this day is even though the black community loves the man they seemed to have lost the message. Character doesn't seem to count for anything. Life doesn't seem to have much value. A sports star or a gangster rapper seem to be the role models of the black youth of today. Apparently being a dad and taking care of personal responsibilities are not important.

Am I stereo typing? Yes, but there is truth in what I'm saying. Of course there are plenty of black people that are good parents, hold down good jobs and contribute a tremendous amount to society but not as many that could and should.

I hope one day that we all realize Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'Dream' to live together in a truly color blind society but that dream seems to be fading away. That's sad because right now the black community needs a dream to believe in. We all do.

I don't think it has a lot to do with whether or not your black. It seems to be a wide spread issue that people aren't taking their parenting seriously. And the morals that "we" use to have also took a nosedive over the years.
White people are just as guilty of all of this as black people..
Or so it seems to me.

I agree morals have taken a turn for the worse.

Down here in the south the black community has some serious issues and they don't seem to want to deal with them. The black on black crime rate in our city is almost the highest in the nation. Bill Cosby has tried to bring these issues front and center and has been ridiculed for his efforts. I just think Martin Luther King Jr had a diffrent vision than the one currently being lived and perused.
I am only going by what I see with my own eyes, it may be different in other parts of the country.

Believe me I could write a book about problems in the white community and unfortunately, I would be a frequent offender of some of these problems.

I'm glad to get your take on things as we live in a different area of the world respectively.

Jen: You're right. I had some friends that moved down here from Boston for a few years. When they got here they tried to act as if there was no problem. They berated us for complaining but when they left they complained about it more than any southerner I know. It changes things when you have to live with problems you know can be solved.

Daughter of night: I figured (knew)you were talking about me but one should never assume :)
