Family Traditions

Traditions anyone?

After the wife and I had our first child we wanted to start some traditions that we could look back on with some happy memories. We struggled to find something unique until our neighbor gave us a garden elf for Christmas. We had no idea what to do with the thing so it sat on our counter for a month. One day I needed the space and moved it. My son noticed it had been moved and wanted to know who moved it. I told him maybe the elf was magic and moved itself. To my delight my son started checking the elf everyday to see if it had moved again. That was the day we began living with the a magic elf. Now when the elf moves my sons search the house from top to bottom until they find it. Evey year right before Christmas the elf disappears for good and returns in a wrapped gift to one of the children. They love it.

We have had a few accidents with the elf and are now on our third one. It seems when they break the magic goes to the north pole and creates a new one. The latest one is cast iron so I think we have a keeper. My hope is that one day my son will move the elf on me and the other children. When the kids grow up and move out we can magical pass the elf around through gift giving and remember the days of them screaming through the house in search of the magic elf.

Awwwwwwwww that's really sweet! Magic elf! Kids need stuff like that, it makes them more creative in their thinking.

In my opinion - the more creative the better!!

When we were little and it was easter my mum and dad use to hide easter eggs all around the sitting room!

They would leave a carrot out for the easter bunny and when we would wake up it would be all chewed like a rabbit had actually done it!

It was so magical, yet so real! I can still recall the magic now, it's horrid really , because when you get older the magic fades.

Children are amazing, their senses so open and imaginations so wonderous! I wanna be one again :(

Keep the magic and you will never grow old. That's what i do.

Pink Floyd-

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ships smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I cant hear what youre sayin.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

daughter: thank you, it might not be as creative as your Valentine Day gun tradition.

Lindsay: The good news is you will get to be one again, when you have some children of your own. It's even more magical to watch them. Unless you hide behind a door and tell them "Don’t come in or I will chop your tongue off and eat it on a piece of toast”. Then you may just create some not to magical issues :)

Harbinger: A very true statement indeed. As always Pink Floyd rocks!

It's a great idea.
I like garden gnomes too, so it's a mondo combo.

Lin, I didnt realise your mum hid the easter eggs, I just thought she ate them all then rushed out to buy you more on the actual day!

awww thats lovely. You're such a big softy! I'll have to remember things like this when I eventually have sprogs. - Did I just say that?!

Spiller5: 'Oh to be a kid again doing stupid things like this! ...' so hopping through your neighbours' garden in fresh snow is adult is it? ;)

RW - Ha ha! you remembered my little story about my uncle. Mind you, how could you forget it!! It's a bit nasty!

Spiller. You are right I'm too much of a kid myself to have kids. I know it sounds selfish but I don't fancy the idea of saggy boobs and a flabby stomach when I work so hard at the gym! I know, I know - sounds vein!

Oh, Lindsay... kids keep us young, not make us old!!!

that's what I loved about this post... just another example of how our children keep us young. ;-)

Cutest story ever!

Lindsay: you can have kids without getting a flabby stomach and saggy boobs. Just be a rich celebrity like Madonna or Sarah Jessica Parker! (Easy as that!)
