Rolling in the dough

After seeing Jen's post about baking Challah bread I was so inspired I decided to give it a try. Even though I got flour everywhere, I have to say, I was proud of my first attempt at baking. I'll pause until the cheering subsides.... Thanks to Jen's excellent direction and informative videos I knew exactly what to do, even if I didn't always manage to do it.

Thanks Jen for all the help and for the delicious bread.

Fantastic!!
It looks mouthwatering. You did a very good job!! Your bread looks better then mine did!

Now you'll have to start baking other stuff too!!! I have a large recipe collection.

Learning how to work the dough is going to take some time. That was tougher than I thought.

The kids really liked the bread but I was hoping it would fluffier, less dense. Could I have done something wrong with the dough that kept it from fluffing up? Or is there something to add to make it fluffier?

The biggest thing that makes dough dense is not waiting the full time for it to rise. Or killing part of the yeast off. But looking at your bread, that doesn't look like it was a problem for you. You let it rise twice right?

And, did you let your yeast proof?

Yeah, did let the yeast proof but I may not have let it rise the full hour the second time.

What about punching it down? Could I have done too much or too little?

My parents liked it too :0

It could have been the punching. Punching it down is just giving it a couple of quick jabs and rolling it around on your work surface. You don't want to mess with it too much...

Having said that, since it's a braided bread, it's going to come up denser. It looks like it rose very well.
If you want a smoother, softer, yummy bread, I'll hook you up with the honey bread I've been making. It's an easy recipe and it produces the most mouth-water bread.
:)

I think you did a super job!
