Outflanked, almost
The continuing drama of simply and nicely turning down an invitation to a party.
After my post yesterday the wife's sister continued to apply pressure to get her to come to the party. This ended with a phone call to me at work from the wife that started "I hope this doesn't up set you."

I'm still trying to get over having a birthday party where everyone is expected to wear formal attire. It just cracks me up every time I think about it.
Apparently your sister-in-law doesn't know that many of us can get just as drunk and obnoxious in a ball gown as we can in jeans and a NASCAR hat. It's almost worth dusting off a formal so I can crash her party. ;-)
Sucks for your wife to be in that position, but then again, it seems to me that her sister would know very well what type of party she'd enjoy and why and wouldn't trouble her with it if it's not her thing. It also seems to me that she's not really having a birthday party, she's having an "affair," and she must realize that FAMILIES have PARTIES, not "affairs" or "events."
Whatever. It still just cracks me up. I hope your wife isn't feeling too bad about the whole thing... and i hope you two can do something really fun together that night, just to rub it in. ;-)
Your wife doesn't want to go - she never did :)
Your sister in law is pissed off because she hadn't even thought you would turn her down.
If I was your wife I'd go in a mini skirt and get drunk :) (probably why I'm single)
"I hope this doesn't up set you." - Awww... any conversation that opens like this is an open invitation for emotional blackmail. Doesn't matter if you really are, or are not upset, you feign upset and get a steak dinner out of it.
At the same time, your wife could have used you being upset as an excuse to get out of going to the party. Sure you end up getting the blame, but better you than your wife in my humble opinion.
Daughter: Ha! You're funny. :) That's why I posted it. It cracks me up too. She had a oyster roast for her son's first birthday. WTF? Complete with wine and drinks. At least or kids were allowed to come :|
Let me frame this picture for you. The wife's sister always knew who she was going to marry. If you asked her his name she could have told you even before they met. His name has always been "Doctor".
TT: I think there is a part of the wife that DID want to go. I guess it's kind of a romantic idea. All dressed up, rubbing elbows with the upper class of our community. I think she finally realized her sister didn't want HER there as much as she wanted the RIGHT her there. I hope that made sense.
HA! The wife would never get drunk and ruin her party. To be truthful the wife has more class in her little finger than her sister has in her whole body. The wife is true to who she is and can see value in people for what they are. She must be able to the good in the bad, she married me didn't she? ;)
Darren: :) "I hope this doesn't up set you." means I did something I already think you disagree with but I did it anyway.
She did use me as the excuse for us not going but she got herself into a pickle when she agreed to come without me, hence losing me as an excuse. Without even trying I came out of the whole thing smelling like a rose. :D
knock knock
whos there
ME
I'm not going to comment on this post coz that would mean I'd have to read it and soooooo bloody busy at the moment not getting much time!
I read your post on Lindsays blog so just thought that I'd say hi, I'll try and get her to update her blog sometime, I think she has just become addicted to facebook thats all :-) hope things are well in the bloggging community
Yeah!!!
The return of Spiller. I'm glad to hear you're busy. I hope it's busy in the good way. :)
At least leave a smiley face every now and again to let us know you're still alive. Sheesh.
You just made my day :D

*nod*
It's not only odd that she have to throw an "event" instead of a birthday party, but she must know that you guys aren't going to be interested in going. Especially if she sets more rules, like the floor length gown.
Maybe she's just trying to set herself up for disappointment.
I'm glad you guys aren't going. You and your wife wouldn't have a good time. Why bother?
Hopefully you guys can make it without getting suckered into it/guilt tripped into it!
Good luck (more to your wife!! It's hard to turn down your sister I imagine.)
SPILLERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! :)
Jen: I believe her sister (like so many in my life) thinks if we just went to the party we would love the experience. In other words "we don't know what we're missing". She wants to show us the light. Her light.
She forgets, we've been to plenty of these type "events". I guess she feels hers will somehow be different. *shrug*
It's Thursday and I still can't guarantee she won't go. Her sister, her decision.
LOL - I would do what time traveller said and go in a mini skirt and get drunk!!! Time traveller? Is that 20 something? Well how things can change in a few months!!!! I will try and keep up to date from now on!
Make a habit of "Friday blogging" or something! Ha ha
Did it happen?
Where's my edition of "Of The Week"??
I'm waiting.
:-D
I already have it ready. I should post it tonight. I did post the out come of the party situation.
Are you getting better?
I am indeed.
It's slow but I've made a lot of progress already.
Thanks for all your good vibes, RT. I believe they've helped!
